Blink 182 haven’t completed their comeback album – but frontman Tom DeLonge says you can hear exactly how it will sound by listening to the three members’ side-projects.
What’s more, it hasn’t required a great deal of effort to put together, because the band are working better than they went their separate ways in 2004.
Speaking at Leeds on the anniversary of their friend DJ-AM's death, DeLonge tells Rock Radio’s Andrew Watson: "The band seems to have doubled or tripled in size since the breakup. It’s explosive, it’s electric – we don’t need to do any work on it."I feel like a little kid full of wonder. I can’t comprehend the size of these shows. We’re getting on better than we ever have, and there’s a confidence there now. We love what we do and we know we do it pretty well."
Discussing the follow-up to 2003’s self-titled release, DeLonge explains: "The record will be very modern, relevant, fast and fun. It’ll be a mixture of drum’n’bass, indie rock and stadium rock. I can’t say we’ve done that before, but you can see the tip of the iceberg on the last record.
"Anyone who listens to my band Angels and Airwaves will know where I sit musically. If you imagine that, mixed in with what the other guys do in their spare time, you get it. It’s going to be a really great collaboration of the best of three different genres of music."
While Blink are enjoying playing in the UK and Europe, with DeLonge grateful for the crowds’ passion throughout their tour, he says the shows aren’t quite as spectacular as those they’ve played in the US.
He explains: "We brought the big stage set, but we had to cut it back a bit. There’s a very big, heavy and complex rigging system we used when Travis Barker is flying about on his drumset. We built a new one here and we’re pretty much able to do what we want, but it’s still not what we did in the States."
